You know what the best part of summer is? The long weekends. So just like last month, this weekend we have an extra day to pack in the fun. Not only is the big Caribana event kicking off the weekend (yes, I’m still calling it that so sue me), there are music festivals and food festivals fighting for your attention. The weather is supposed to co-operate, so they say, so get out there. But before you do, here’s my TOP5 to do this weekend to help you plan it all out so you don’t miss a beat.
Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade – One of Toronto’s premier festivals holds its biggest party this weekend with a 3.5 km procession down Lake Shore. The culmination of a month of food, music and dancing, the parade is always visually stunning and infectiously fun. So if you didn’t get a chance to getaway to a fabulous, exotic island somewhere in the Caribbean this summer, maybe you can just pretend this Saturday.
The Grove Music Festival - The increasingly popular Fort York Common hosts another all-day music fest this Saturday with a bit of everything. This all-age celebration’ line-up includes Phoenix, Girl Talk, Hot Chip, The Gaslight Anthem, Earl Sweatshirt, Wavves, Icona Pop, Palma Violets, Young Empires and Nightbox. Check out the event website for tickets and dance the day away.
Artfest Summer Art & Craft Show – Returning this weekend, this craft show is part of a series of juried arts and craft shows in the Distillery District where top artisans and artists display their work. More than 65 artists from across the country sell pottery, paintings and many more handmade wares. Come by, chat with the artists and maybe buy a few pieces for the home.
Scarborough Ribfest - One of Scarborough’s largest community events returns for its 12th consecutive year to celebrate one of the most beloved parts of the cow. This Friday to Monday at Thomson Memorial Park, vendors will be selling a wide variety of ribs and offering a way of tasting them you may have never experienced before. Although ribs will take centre stage, a lot of different foods will also be available including hot dogs, french fries and corn on the cob. A cook-off features 11 top “ribbers,” while the lineup of live music should keep the party going all weekend long. Midway rides, and games are on hand for kids, along with karaoke competitions and an all day beer garden for the grown-ups.
Movies at Riverdale Park – If you plan on doing some heavy weekend-celebrating this Friday and Saturday, and need some recuperating time, why not spend Sunday night under the stars at Riverdale Park. Movies in the Park is bringing one of the classic faves to the outdoor screen, E.T. this Sunday. Bring a snack, a blanket and settle in to watch a classic…and maybe even take a nap.
